Citadel Investment Group vanquished D.E. Shaw to win the second annual edition of Alternative Investment News’ March Madness Hedge Fund Tournament.

Citadel’s path to the final led through Adage Capital Management, Canyon Capital Advisors, Renaissance Technologies and finally SAC Capital Advisors. Many of these battles were extremely close-fought, but Ken Griffin’s firm ultimately triumphed on the back of a few factors: performance (returns close to 30 percent in its Kensington Global Strategies fund and close to 34 percent in its Wellington Partners strategy), innovation (the first-ever public debt offering by a hedge fund in the U.S.) and willingness to undertake contrarian missions such as purchasing Amaranth Advisors’ energy book.
