Brown Brothers Harriman & Co. (BBH) has appointed two new partners, Carl S. Cutler and Maroa C. Velez, effective 1 January 2008.
Cutler joined BBH in 1988 as a relationship manager in the Philadelphia Banking Department. In 1996 he was promoted to managing director and became the chief credit officer in Philadelphia. Since that time, Cutler has been responsible for developing the banking business, which targets substantial privately held companies and their owners.
Prior to joining BBH, Cutler was a commercial banker in Philadelphia with Mellon and PNC Financial. He earned a B.A. in Economics from Denison University in 1980. Cutler resides in Villanova, Pennsylvania, with his wife Carol and their three children, Brad, Ryan and Laura.
Maroa C. Velez joined BBH in 1995 as head of the Audit Department. Velez was promoted to managing director in 1998 and served as comptroller from mid 2000 until the end of 2007, when she was named head of the firm’s Operations division, which supports all of BBH’s business lines.
Prior to joining BBH, Velez was the general auditor of Empire Blue Cross and Blue Shield, and was also head of a global Audit Division of Manufacturers Hanover Trust Co. Velez started her business career in public accounting with Deloitte & Touche, where she specialised in financial services. Velez is a Certified Public Accountant and holds a B.S. in accounting from Fairleigh Dickinson University. She resides in Montville, New Jersey, with her husband Tom Vurno and their son Tommy.
