The results included strong performances from Barclays Capital, the investment banking division, and Barclays Global Investors (BGI).Together, Barclays Capital and BGI represented 31% of the Barclays total profit before tax for the first six months of 2004.

Barclays Capital reported profit before tax of £599 million ($1.1 billion) on total revenues of £1.7 billion ($3.1 billion), representing a 37% increase in profit before tax from the same period in 2003.

BGI reported profit before tax of £150 million ($272 million) on total revenues of £423 million ($770 million), an increase of 76% in profit before tax over the same period in 2003.
