Barclays Capital has appointed Wensheng Peng as director and head of China Research, a position which will see Peng Based in Hong Kong, leading the firm’s coverage of macro-economic research on China and Hong Kong.
He will report to Peter Redward, head of Emerging Asia Research, Barclays Capital.
Peng joins Barclays Capital from the Hong Kong Monetary Authority (HKMA) where he was head of External Division (China Affairs), responsible for overseeing research on mainland China macro-economic and financial sector issues as well as covering development and cooperation initiatives with the Mainland. Prior to that, he was head of the HKMA’s Economic Research Division. Peng started his career in 1993 as an economist with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) in Washington DC and holds a PhD in economics from the University of Birmingham, England.
“Wensheng brings to Barclays Capital a wealth of experience in analysing the Chinese macro-economy and financial markets, further enhancing and differentiating our Asian macro-economic research offering,” says Redward.

In April this year, Barclays Capital hired Kyohei Morita as director, chief economist Japan. In November 2007, it also announced the appointments of Sailesh Jha as Director, senior regional economist with responsibility for coverage of the Indian sub-continent and Indonesia, and Wai Ho Leong as associate director, regional economist covering Singapore, Malaysia and Taiwan.
