Barclays Global Investors (BGI) has named Terry Watson as Global Head of Risk and Compliance.

In that position, Watson will be responsible for all aspects of risk management for the global firm, including synthesizing best-practice approaches across the market, credit, investment and operational functions, evolving governance and further integration of the risk management function, strategic oversight of system development to comply with Basel II, and coordination with the risk management function at Barclays PLC, BGI’s parent company. He will also have oversight for regulatory compliance.

Watson will report to Rich Ricci, Global Chief Operating Officer for BGI, and will be based in San Francisco.

“We’re pleased to attract such a high caliber executive as Terry who has tremendous depth of experience with risk and compliance in asset management,” said Rich Ricci. “He will spearhead the continued evolution of BGI’s highly-regarded approach to managing risks in its global business.”

Watson, 53, joined BGI from Bank of America where he was Executive Vice President, Asset Management Risk Executive, based in Charlotte, North Carolina. In that role he had oversight for operational risk, independent oversight of investment management, and merger integration with Columbia Management Group covering money market funds, active and index equity, fixed income, alternatives and institutional separate accounts.

Previously, Watson held numerous roles with the bank since 1973, including over 10 years of experience in credit, market and operational risk management. He is a native of the United Kingdom with a degree from Oxford University.
