Americans held a record $16.4 trillion in retirement assets at the end of 2006, up $1.7 trillion (12%) from the previous year, the Investment Company Institute reported. At year-end 2006, assets held in employer-sponsored defined contribution plans totaled $4.1 trillion, and mutual funds accounted for $2.1 trillion of that total. The median fund-owning household held $48,000 in mutual funds, according to the report.
