While it appears to be going strong, a joint assessment of the Italian hedge fund industry released Monday by AIMA and the Simmons and Simmons law firm did find some areas that could use some improvement.

The survey says the industry has an opportunity to push the domestic market forward by combining skills development and expanding the entrepreneurial structure of the funds.

The report outlines one of the industry’s key deficiencies is an imbalance between the roughly 3% share of the market that hedge funds have in comparison to the more than 97% share funds of hedge funds have.

The report says the industry has a definite need to become more focused on international markets and to become specialized on skills across the range of strategies but, especially, on-shore knowledge which has muted market competition.

The risk adverse local market and some legal subtleties bring the risk of anchoring the nature of the business.

But the report highlighted positive aspects of the market, including its being well regulated and stable.
