The $555 billion appropriations bill signed yesterday by President Bush includes $180 million for “foreclosure prevention counseling.”

The National Foundation for Credit Counseling (NFCC) has welcomed the grants, which will go to counselors approved by the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD).

The NFCC is the longest-serving and largest non-profit counseling network in the US, with 113 agencies, 911 locations within every state, and 1,317 certified housing counselors. Its member agencies currently serve more than two million consumers each year.

“The NFCC welcomes this funding commitment and the recognition that foreclosure mitigation counseling makes a real difference in the lives of families and communities in crisis,” says Susan C. Keating, president and CEO of the NFCC.
