Howard Brindle has joined Universities Superannuation Scheme (USS) as chief operating officer, effective March 12. He joins from J.P. Morgan, where he was executive director, head of EMEA Transfer Agency Operations.

Based in USS’ London Investment Office, Brindle has oversight of the day-to-day administrative aspects of the funds investment mandate. He replaces Andrew Little, who left towards the end of last year. While Little’s role was chief administrative officer (CAO), the new role is similar.

Brindle joined J.P. Morgan in September 2008 first as head of Product, EMEA Transfer Agency, responsible for strategy and management of the product within J.P. Morgan Worldwide Securities Services. He helped to grow the business, providing services to over 50 fund manager clients. He then became executive director, head of EMEA Transfer Agency Operations where he was responsible for teams in London, Dublin and Luxembourg. Before J.P. Morgan, Brindle was CAO of Lehman Brothers Asset Management from 2005 with responsibility for all support and infrastructure elements of the business. Before then he was CAO, executive director, European Operations at Lehman from 2003 to 2005.

J.P. Morgan spokesperson Craig Macdonald confirmed Brindle’s departure from J.P. Morgan, and said: “We wish him well in his new role.”

McDonald added that J.P. Morgan does not plan to seek a replacement for the role. “We remain very committed to transfer agency,” he said.

USS had AuM of 32 billion at March 31 2011. It is the second largest pension fund in the UK behind the BT Pension Scheme, which had almost 37 billion of AuM.
