Lord Sharman To Succeed Pehr Gyllenhammar As Chairman of UK Insurance Group

Pehr Gyllenhammar will retire as chairman and director of Aviva, the UK-based insurance company, effective December 31, 2005. Gyllenhammar will be succeeded as chairman by Lord Sharman of Redlynch, OBE, on January 1, 2006. Lord Sharman joined the board in January 2005.

Aviva also confirms that George Paul and Elizabeth Vallance, independent non-executive directors, will retire from the Aviva board also at the end of this month. As stated in the company’s 2004 annual report and accounts, both Paul and Vallance have served in excess of nine years with the company, or one of the legacy companies, and are retiring in line with the board’s rotation and succession plans for its non-executive directors.

As part of this succession planning Mary Francis joined the board with effect from October 1, 2005.
