Santander appoints US head of global transaction banking

The division’s former boss, Carlos Gutierrez, is to become global head of financial institutions in Madrid.

Spanish bank Santander has promoted its former head of sales for global transaction banking to head up its US division.

Mariano Urquiola has taken responsibility for US cash management, export and agency finance and trade and working capital solutions.

Urquiola has been with the bank since August 2011, having joined from Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corporation (SMBC) where he was a vice president.

Carlos Gutierrez was the previous head of GTB (US). He has now moved to assume the position of global head of financial institutions at the bank’s GTB team in Madrid.

Gutierrez has been with Santander since June 2006 when he joined as global head of cash management before being promoted to head up the US global transaction banking operation.

He spent the majority of the previous 13 years working in Citi’s global transaction banking unit as a relationship manager.

In October 2014, the Bank announced it was restructuring its global transaction banking team with a new heads of cash management, international financial institutions, trade and working capital solutions, export and agency finance and trade asset solutions.

A spokeswoman for Banco Santander was unavailable to comment at the time of publication.
